1. Jennifer DeStefano — Scottsdale, Arizona — "Mom, they have me"

In April 2023, Jennifer DeStefano received a call from what sounded exactly like her 15-year-old daughter, sobbing and saying "Mom, they have me." A male voice took the phone and demanded a $1 million ransom, then dropped to $50,000 when she said she could not pay. While the scammer was on the line, Jennifer's husband called their daughter, found her safe at a ski training, and the scam unraveled. DeStefano later testified before the U.S. Senate, becoming one of the first widely-covered AI voice scam victims.

The wish-I-had-spotted moment: The call came from an unknown number. They wanted ransom in cryptocurrency. Both are textbook red flags — but the cloned voice short-circuited every critical filter for several minutes.

2. The Perkins family — Texas — "Dad, I crashed the car"

Ben Perkins (a pseudonym used by the source) received a call from what sounded exactly like his son, claiming to have crashed his car and hit a pregnant woman. A "lawyer" came on the line and walked him through wiring $15,449 to a bail bondsman. The voice was so convincing — including the son's slight stutter on the word "Dad" — that Perkins did not pause. He realized only when his actual son called him from work, hours later.

The wish-I-had-spotted moment: No callback verification. The lawyer specifically told him not to hang up — a textbook social-engineering tactic that AI voice clones now exploit at scale.

3. Ruth Card — Regina, Canada — "Grandma, I'm in jail"

Ruth Card, a 73-year-old grandmother, received a call from what sounded exactly like her grandson Brandon, saying he was in jail and needed bail money. She and her husband withdrew CAD $3,000 from their bank and were heading to a second branch when a manager flagged the transaction and warned them about the AI scam pattern. They called Brandon directly. He was at home.

The wish-I-had-spotted moment: The bank manager — not the family — broke the spell. Many banks now train tellers to recognize the pattern. Families should not depend on this catch.

4. The Salt Lake CFO — corporate wire transfer — $35,000

A finance manager at a mid-sized Utah firm received a Teams call from what sounded exactly like the company's CFO, instructing her to wire $35,000 to a "vendor" before end of day. The voice clone matched the CFO's slight nasal timbre and his characteristic "alright, alright" filler. The transfer cleared. The fraud was discovered the next morning when the real CFO returned from a flight and was surprised by the wire.

5. The Norfolk grandmother — Virginia — "We've kidnapped your grandson"

6. The Lubbock retiree — "Mom, I'm hurt"

An elderly Texas mother received a call from her son's "voice" saying he had been in a car accident and needed money for an ER co-pay. She wired $4,000 to a payment processor. 7. The Detroit anonymous family — $26,000 — never recovered

An adult son's voice was cloned from a podcast appearance. The clone called his mother claiming he had been arrested for DUI in another state. A "public defender" came on the line. The mother sent $26,000 in cashier's checks via overnight FedEx to a Detroit address. The bank could not recall the funds; the address was a mail-drop. The son had been featured on a regional business podcast nine months earlier — three minutes of public audio was all the attackers needed.

The wish-I-had-spotted moment: Public-facing audio (podcasts, interviews, TikTok) is now part of the attack surface for the entire family. Families with public-figure members should treat it as an explicit threat input.

The pattern across all seven cases

  • Defense that worked when present: Family safe word in 1 of 1 case where it existed; bank teller intervention in 1 of 1 case where it triggered.

Every published victim has said some version of: "I never thought it could happen to me." The pattern is the warning.

Prepare your family before the call arrives
